billmaher

It's a tough time to be a democratic talk show host. Now, with a democrat in office as President, you can't rely on the old stand by jokes of the president being dumb and a bad speaker. Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert have the correct models for shows, a lot of comedy and a little serious. Bill Maher on the other hand is the opposite, so now he is kind of screwed. The president that he voted for is actually in office, so it's tough to complain about him, unless it's funny, which Bill Maher isn't very good at. This brings up his little rant against Obama, claiming he is on television too much and needs to actually “do something”. He also suggested that Obama act a little more like a Bush, a man Bill Maher despised for the last 8 years. Bill, why aren't you ever happy? I get that your schtick is to be “angry guy”, but why not be angry about policy or something legitimate, not because the guy goes on a date and the news puts it on. The media reports what brings in ratings, why is that the President's fault? You should have made your show more funny and less serious, because when you try to combine the two, you just fail. You're boring Bill Maher. You have been for a while. I wish you'd say something new and creative, just once. Most of the time, you just remind me of Bill O'Reilly.

Wow, kind of harsh, but you made some very good points about Mahrer's "anger" and yes, I wish he'd attack policy too...not the president!!

i know you'll get mad at me, but the president is only a great speaker, inspiring actually, when he's on script. once he's off he stutters and stammers as much, if not more, than bush ever did.

that said you're 100% right about maher. he was never remotely funny and got on by filling his crowd with hippy liberals who'll hoot and holler at anything remotely anti bush.

he's never going to pick on obama for policy. he agrees with the policies. the ones he doesn't agree with he'll never talk about because that would give conservatives the ability to say "look even this guy who would lick the ground you walk on if you asked him to disagrees with you."

hell, look at peta with the fly swatting incident, had it been bush that did that i guarantee there would have been billboards calling him a murderer. meanwhile obama gets off with "swatting a fly on tv indicates he's not perfect."

we're at a tough crossroads, he's still new enough that no liberal will pick on him because bush is still fresh in our minds and they call get away with another few months of call backs. the moderate conservatives won't pick on him because he hasn't mess with the status quo THAT much and they know he/congress could if provoked. and no one listens to the hard core conservatives because they're a**holes and easily buried on cable where you can ignore them to watch cnn or msnbc.

the late night guys will be the first to do it. my guess is it will be conan as he's going to fall behind letterman big time and will need the controversy of "oh my god, he picked on obama! let's see what he has to say now!" unless of course hugh grant gets caught with another hooker.

meanwhile maher will be left to his unfunny self looking stupid while chuckling at his own jokes because they worked when he told them in the mirror...

good stuff on thursday by the way (= ya comin back this week?

I couldn't agree with you more - did you ever see his "documentary" Religulous? Ridiculous is what it really was.
