So, as you may or may not know, I'm biracial.

My mom, my dad, my Oma (dad's mom), me, and my sister, Berlin 1987.

So my mom is black and French (Creole) and my dad is from Germany. Skin tone wise, I look more like my father. This affords me this amazing privilege of knowing what people say when they don't think anyone black is listening. I have to admit, it used to sting when someone used the N-word in front me. But now I take it as an opportunity to teach them a lesson/embarrass them. DO NOT SAY THINGS WHEN YOU DON'T KNOW ALL THE PEOPLE AROUND YOU. I can't tell you how many times this has happened to me. Sure, they are apologetic afterward (who wouldn't be after being made a fool of?), but just one time I'd like someone to own their ignorant racism. I'd have a tiny bit of respect for them.

But it's definitely cool to feel like a fly on the wall.

Yikes!!! That's gotta hurt! I'm glad you can show those jerks how ignorant they are!

It definitely hurts sometimes, especially if I know the person isn't a complete moron. I think it probably hurts my dad more when it happens to him. Thanks for the comment, I ADORE your blog!

That's a shame... I kinda run into a similar deal when talking to someone who doesn't know I have biracial children. So rude.

I love the picture of you and your family, so cute! How old were you? said...

Your father sure looks big in that picture.

My family genealogy is German as well.

People suck :( , they used to ask my mom if she was my babysitter. Ugh.

I'm 5 in that picture, it was my second trip to Germany. :)

Aw, that has to suck that people say that type of thing to you. They don't understand how mean they're being.

P.S. That's a cool picture!

I know the feeling being in a biracial relationship, sometimes people who don't know me can say some off the wall crap! People can be so rude and ignorant at times.

Wow! That picture makes me feel old since I can honestly say we knew each other way back then!
